Love Story Starter #1

February 10, 2017 By Elaine Gray

Here is the story starter sentence:

She felt as though she had just been given a death sentence as he slipped the ring on her finger.

Here is LOVE STORY STARTER #1

Pastor Henderson’s voice came toward me like water rushing through a tunnel.    I gulped down the knot of dread in my throat when Max lifted my hand.  He started repeating the words after Pastor Henderson.  I felt as though I had just been given a death sentence as he slipped the ring on my finger.    I closed my eyes for a moment to allow another face, another smile into my thoughts but Max squeezed my hand and snapped me back.  I knew I had to give my full attention to Pastor Henderson now.   I focused long enough to get through my wedding vows without a stumble.  Later, I posed in front of the altar for a photo shoot with my best friend and maid of honor.

“Are you okay?” Sandra asked

“Yes.” I said, holding onto my smile for the photographer’s camera.

“I wish you hadn’t done this.”   Sandra said.

Her words pushed me out of the pose, and I gave the photographer the time-out signal.  I turned to Sandra taking her hand and led her away into the dressing room locking the door behind us.   I walked across the room to the full-length mirror on the wall and stood in front of it to see if I still appeared the happy bride.   From the mirror, I saw the disappointment in Sandra’s eyes as she watched me.

“Look, you of all people know why I did this.”  I said.

“No, I don’t.”  Sandra said.

“I can’t do it alone.”

“You have resources and support.”

“I don’t want to do it alone.”

“You could have raised your child without this farce.”  Sandra said.  “I’m doing it.”

“But, I’m not you.”  I said.   “I don’t want to raise mine alone.”

“His father was willing to make a family.”

“Yes, but I didn’t want to marry him.” I said.  “He was just a fling.”

“Isn’t that what Max is really?  A fling?  An escape from the one you want but can’t have?”  Sandra walked around and stood next to the mirror facing me.  “You know you don’t love him.”

I looked directly at her face and saw her tight lips.   I knew I could never make her understand.  I just don’t have her strength.

“Look, Max has been a good friend over the years.  He will be a good husband, and he adores my son.   That’s all that matters.”

“That’s what you say, now.”

“That’s what I know now.”

“Ok, I give up.” Sandra said.   She turned and walked toward the door yanking it open.   I walked passed her, and we both stepped out into the hallway.

“Here comes your husband now.” Sandra said.   I saw Max and the photographer coming our way.

Soon we were finally done with all of the posing and posturings.    We rushed to the reception. We walked into the captain’s ballroom to the applause of our guests, and all I could hope for was to keep my smile in place.   After standing in the reception line, dancing with Max and my Dad, my feet ached. I needed a breather.   A restroom break was the perfect excuse.  Even in my wedding dress, I was able to sneak outside and up to the promenade deck.   The health club/spa was dark, but the door to the lobby area was open and offered the refuge I needed.   I sat on the bench farthest away from the door so that I wouldn’t be seen by anyone taking a late night walk.

Sandra was right but so was Max.   There was no reason for me to raise Joey alone.   Max and I had been friends for a long time.  This friendship was a good start.   Wasn’t it?   I’ll learn to love him in time.  Won’t I?

The moonlight gleamed over the calm of the ocean beyond the ship. I wanted that peaceful feeling to embrace me now.

“Hey”.

I jumped at the sound of that voice and turned toward the door.

“Sorry.  I didn’t mean to scare you.”   A tall silhouette said and slipped in the doorway.

“Troy?”   I said.

“Yes”.

“You’re here?”

“Yes.” The tall silhouette said as he walked toward me opening his arms.

I stood up and glided right into his embrace.  Now I was calm again.

Celebrate LOVE

February 9, 2017 By Elaine Gray

February is the celebration month for lovers.    Some of you may know that I am a writer working on my first novel series.   The novel series category is Women’s Fiction with a Romantic Element which means that my heroine character overcomes an obstacle to becoming the best woman she can be and on her journey, she discovers a worthy love.    I am inspired to write about relationships and the human motivations to acquire this thing called LOVE.  Many times I am asked about the inspiration for story ideas.    I call them sparks.   These sparks can come from an overheard conversation or a song on the radio.

As with any art form, writing requires practice.   One of the exercises I do is to read a sentence and write a scene utilizing that sentence.   I use story prompts and write for about 30 minutes.   Some of the results are interesting, and I may use them for future stories.     This month, I want to share a few of the love stories I started as my way of celebrating Valentine’s Day in a fun and creative way.   I hope you will enjoy and give me some feedback on The Love Story Starters.

Love Story Starter #1 will be posted on tomorrow.

Girlfriend Gathering – Ensemble Theatre Review – “What I Learned In Paris”

March 23, 2015 By Elaine Gray

What I Learned In ParisThis past weekend some girlfriends and I got together to attend a play at our favorite local theatre – The Ensemble Theatre (http://www.ensemblehouston.com).   The current production showing is “What I Learned in Paris” written by Pearl Cleage (www.pearlcleage.net) one of my favorite playwrights and authors.

This story really resonated with me because it enveloped a main theme that is of interest to me – a woman’s journey to enlightenment and self-empowerment.   Every woman should have a moment in her life journey when she realizes exactly what she wants and that she has the power within herself to make it happen.    This play was about one woman who had surpassed that moment, another woman who was about to start on her journey to that moment, and the man they shared.

It was hilarious and poignant.   Detria Ward (https://www.facebook.com/detria.ward) was fabulous as Eve Madison.  I am sure that every woman in the audience could relate to this story.   The girlfriends and I thoroughly enjoyed it and discussed it again as we munched on our delicioso South American food at Churrascos Restaurant (https://www.cordua.com/churrascos/).    It was well worth the drive through a very rainy day in Houston to attend this outing.

Best Things in Life #11 – Dancing

March 11, 2015 By Elaine Gray

If you are endowed with the ability to hear the beat and rhythm of music then you are capable of enjoying one of the most exciting experiences of human movement – dancing.    Dance is just as ancient as the human race and has been an integral part of our rituals, social events, and spiritual gatherings.   Dance remains one of the most expressive ways that we communicate with one another.

I love dance.   In my youth, I won a few freestyle dance contests and a talent show.   As a teenager, I recall dancing every single day after my chores were done.    I could dance alone, with a partner, or with a group of friends.   At the high school dances my partner and I were always one of the first couples on the floor.   When the music started I could not keep still as there was such freedom in “moving” to the music.   As a young woman, the ability to dance was a prerequisite for all date candidates and the prelude to some very sensual moments.

Then, life happened.   I met someone I really cared about but he did not express himself with dance.  I stopped dancing.   In fact, dancing became a very distant memory for many years as I navigated through motherhood and career.   It slipped away so silently that I did not notice it was gone because of the busy-ness of my life.

Then, I entered into the empty nest phase.   I met someone who brought dance back into my life.  I had all the time to become reacquainted with the freedom and sensuality of it again.   As that old saying goes – it IS better the second time around.

Just to name a few memorable dancing experiences – I have danced the Salsa (Mambo & Merengue) in Miami, Puerto Rico, Santo Domingo, Aruba, and Acapulco.   I have danced the traditional dance of Welcome with the Tlingit Natives in their Beaver Clan House in Ketchikan, Alaska.   I have attempted to hula dance at the Luau Kapolei and the Polynesian Cultural Center in Oahu; and  standing near a waterfall on the road to Hana in Maui.   I still have the Tango to accomplish in Buenos Aires before I can call it quits.

Dancing is happiness.   One of my recurring fond moments is when I am traveling with my sister.   At some point during our time together she will stand in front of a mirror in our hotel room or cruise cabin and dance to the music in her head.     This is when I know she is at her happiest moment.  I always laugh and join her.

Here are some video clips of some happy Salsa dancers.

QUESTION(S):

Can you dance?

Do you like to dance?

When was the last time you danced?

Girlfriend Gathering Review – “A Soulful Christmas” at the Ensemble Theatre

November 26, 2014 By Elaine Gray

Girls Night Out

This past weekend my girlfriends and I kicked off the 2014 holiday season by attending our first event of the season at the Ensemble Theatre in Houston, Texas (http://www.ensemblehouston.com).   As a long-time subscriber, I can always count on the Ensemble Theatre to add a different spice, a different flavor, and a different flair to the traditional offerings on the Houston theatre scene during the holiday season.    Their production of “A Soulful Christmas” is a refreshing new addition for this season.

A Soulful Christmas

When I heard the title I knew we would enjoy some great music and we were not disappointed.   The musical ensembles mesmerized us with their rendition of familiar Christmas songs from the 1940’s to the present and the story that was wrapped around the music was very original.   The talent of the singers, actors, and dancers was of stellar quality and it was difficult to keep still in our seats.

Since it is still early in the holiday season, I don’t want to be a “spoiler” about the production so this post about it will be short.   For those of you in or near Houston, I highly recommend that you get a ticket as soon as you can because I know all of the shows will sell out.

QUESTION(s):

How do you “kick-off” the holiday season in your town?
