NaBloPoMo #2 – My Favorite Character of All Time Is………

November 4, 2013 By Elaine Gray

NaBloPoMo November 2013Women Having Coffee

I must admit that I do not have a favorite character of all time because I have many favorite characters from different times in my life.   I have been an avid reader since I was a child, I am the daughter of an avid reader/movie-goer, and I go to the movies almost every weekend.    So, I love everyone from Achilles to Captain Jean Luc Picard.  However,  since I must choose one I will refer back to my middle-school reading days when I was enraptured with Greek mythology.   While my friends were grooving to R&B, I was engrossed with the Greek tragedies – especially the love stories.   They did not always end in “happily ever after”.   One such story is the one about Orpheus and Eurydice.

Orpheus was the son of Apollo (god of the sun, music, medicine, poetry, and the fine arts) and Calliope (the superior of the nine Muses).   Therefore, he was gifted musically and poetically.    Orpheus met, loved, and wooed Eurydice for her hand in marriage.   During the days of their wedding celebration, Eurydice was bitten by a snake and died.  Orpheus was so grief stricken that he beseeched permission from Zeus to pursue the restoration of Eurydice’s life from Hades, god of the Underworld.    Zeus was so moved by the songs of the grief stricken Orpheus that he granted permission.   Orpheus traveled to Hades and conquered all barriers with his beautiful music and songs even bringing Hades and Persephone to tears with his songs.   They released Eurydice but with the stipulation that Orpheus not look upon her face until they had departed the Underworld.   Eurydice walked behind Orpheus as they traveled away from the Underworld but in his longing to see his wife, Orpheus turned too soon and only glimpsed her face before she returned to the Underworld.

Orpheus became one of my favorite characters because he sparked my imagination about the beauty of his music and songs that moved Hades, with the hardened heart, to tears.  The courage Orpheus demonstrated to descend to the depths of Hades for his true love was only diminished by the longing he felt to see Eurydice and hold her again.    Orpheus became one of my compass characters to set expectations for a mate – a man who can experience AND express deep emotions.

Thus, he is one of my all-time memorable characters.

Book Review – “Comfort of Fences” by Stacy Overman Morrison

October 30, 2013 By Elaine Gray

Women Having CoffeeA couple of years ago I met Stacy Overman Morrison at the Writers’ League of Texas Agents & Editors Conference in Austin, Texas.  We kept in touch periodically discussing our journey on the writer’s path.    Last week, Stacy contacted me to tell me that her book was released.    I just finished it and it was a great book.    I thought I would send out a quick blog post about it especially since I just posted a few weeks ago about the special friendship between women (Saluting Sister-Girlfriends) which is the thread in this book.    Please consider adding Stacy’s book to your library.

Here is a link to Stacy’s author page on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Stacy-Overman-Morrison/e/B00FYW7OUS

Here is the review I posted on Amazon and Smashwords about Stacy’s book.

I started reading “Comfort of Fences” and was immediately pulled into the relationships of three remarkable women, Ruth, Denise and Georgia and their journeys to acceptance.   This story was so intriguing that it was difficult to find a stopping point at the end of my nightly reading sessions.    I love character-driven stories and the author presented her characters in such a manner that they became living beings in my thoughts.   As a blogger who blogs about the unique bond of friendship between women, I found this story to be an astounding testament to that bond.   It is a “must” read for those women who value the relationships with their mother, daughter, sister, and girlfriend.

Mood and Food – A Toxic Combination

July 21, 2013 By Elaine Gray

Women Having CoffeeHave you ever arrived home tensed/stressed and crunched through an entire row of crackers/cookies or munched to the bottom of a bag of chips?
Have you ever been in a blue mood and the only thing that lifted your spirits was a large bowl of creamy Dulce de Leche or Homemade Vanilla ice cream?
We all have been there and we all have done that!
In a session I had with an “eating management consultant” – (yes, they do exist), I was informed that anger was the driving force for munching/crunching through those crackers/cookies/chips and loneliness/affairs of the heart was the driving emotion to scooping up that luscious bowl of ice cream. Sometimes we feel much better after these episodes even though we may be confused at our sudden compulsive behavior. This behavior is termed “emotional eating” as we are using food to alter our mood.
Determining Emotional Eating
Some of us eat to feel safe and secure. Some of us consider food as our friend. Some of us eat to reward ourselves. Some of us even feel out-of-control just being around food. Some reasons for emotional eating can be negative and some can be positive but if you are eating for any reason other than satisfying a natural hunger, you are an emotional eater.
Emotional eating differs from our normal hunger feelings in that it is usually a specific craving response to a trigger and is only satisfied by a “comfort” food. These “comfort” foods can vary from fatty/sugar-laden foods that give a quick lift to the spirit OR foods with specific textures, taste, and smells. Sometimes indulging in these foods become a mesmerizing experience and we overeat until we are uncomfortable… Afterwards, we may have feelings of guilt about the overeating/bingeing and the unhealthy cycle starts over again.
Combating Emotional Eating
STEP 1 – The first step in the battle against emotional eating is to identify your triggers. Some of these triggers are:
1. Stress
2. Avoidance of Emotions
3. Boredom
4. Learned behaviors – food as a reward
5. Socializing with family/friends:

STEP 2 – The next step is to find another alternative to dealing with your “emotions” other than food. Here is a list of alternatives to consider:

1. Call a supportive family member/friend.
2. Listen to some music
3. Take a bubble bath
4. Become engrossed in a hobby

STEP 3 – One of the most important things you can do when reaching for that bowl of your favorite ice cream or tearing open that bag of chips is just to WAIT. Take a moment, grab a sheet of paper and just write down what you are feeling. Read it, consider it, and just wait. You may find that the craving will past and you will be able to resist.

STEP 4 – The step I  consider the most crucial is to just let the feelings flow. Cry if you need to, shout if you need to, rest if you need to – but don’t try to stop what you are feeling. Let your soul be your guide in these moments.

STEP 5 – Adopt a long-term plan of combating emotional eating by choosing a healthy lifestyle. Here are some tips to consider:

1. Get sufficient amount of sleep – 8 hours is recommended
2. Daily exercise – find a fun physical activity that will keep you motivated
3. Relax – consider meditation or just sit quiet for about 20 minutes each day and clear your mind
4. Foster quality relationships – those that bring positive energy to your life

Emotional eating is an easy response to adopt because we all have to feel emotions. It is a part of the human experience. But, if we realize that we can’t control everything and are cognizant of what we are feeling / why we are feeling it then we can avoid falling into this behavior.

QUESTIONS:

1. Have you ever indulged in emotional eating?
2. If so, what are your triggers?
3. Have you tried to battle emotional eating?
4. If so, were you successful? Please share your experience.

A Simple Thank You – Remembering our Fallen Veterans

May 29, 2012 By Elaine Gray

Today is the day we set aside each year to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country – America – and all that she stands for.   I know a lot of us spend this day at the beach and/or park with family/friends enjoying a day off from work.  However, I hope there were some prayers made for our men and women in uniform who are in harm’s way protecting our freedoms.

In my daily life, whenever I encounter a soldier in uniform, I walk up to him or her; reach out my hand for a handshake, and say, “Thank you for your service to our country.”    I have done this in the grocery store, at the bus stop, in department stores and I am always surprised at the response.   Each soldier that I have acknowledged in this manner seemed very humbled by my thanks.

I feel our soldiers have a right to expect gratitude from us.    They voluntarily leave their careers, lives, and loved ones to do their duty.   Their pledge of allegiance is followed up by direct actions when they go off to face our enemies.    Whether you are supportive of war or not, I believe we all should always support our troops with our voices and our actions.

For our fallen heroes, let us pray for them and for their families.   For our active heroes, let us find one action we can make to show our appreciation for their dutiful service.    Please consider visiting www.militaryfamily.org to find a way to help.

God Bless America!

QUESTIONS:

Do you have any suggestions on how we can support our troops?

Please share.

Girlfriends Out On the Town – A Smooth Jazz Feast

May 7, 2012 By Elaine Gray

Recently, I discovered from a girlfriend that one of my favorite smooth jazz artists was coming to town in 2 days!   I immediately purchased tickets to attend because I was starving for a live smooth jazz concert.    For the past few years, it seems the smooth jazz concert venues in Houston have diminished especially since we lost our smooth jazz station.   It seems that fans in Europe and Asia are more interested in our jazz artists than we are these days.

So, when I heard Kirk Whalum (www.kirkwhalum.com) and Jonathan Butler (www.jonathanbutler.com) were coming to town, I was ecstatic.   It had been too many years since I had seen them live and they were performing at my favorite music theatre – Arena Theatre – (www.arenahouston.com) where every seat is the perfect seat.

Attending that concert made me realize that I could use some soul-healing music in my life on a frequent basis.   So, I am dusting off the CDs from my extensive smooth jazz collection and plan to start following my favorite artists again.

Here are a few of my favorite artists:

Warren Hill                www.warrenhill.com    (Passion Theme)

Kim Waters               www.kimwaters.net     (It’s Time for Love)

Everette Harp           www.everetteharp.com

Marcus Miller           www.marcusmiller.com

Walter Beasley          www.walterbeasley.com

George Duke           www.georgeduke.com

Marion Meadows      www.marionmeadows.com

Phillip Bent

Check them out and listen to the two songs I listed above.

I think a man that can create music with an instrument (especially a saxophone and a guitar), exudes sensuality.   The way they touch and interact with their instruments is like watching a lover’s wooing of his mate.     It definitely puts me in a more loving mood as Jazz is music that truly touches the heart and soul.

QUESTION:

Do you like smooth Jazz?    Why?     Why not?

If so, share some of your favorite artists.

Do you know of any local smooth jazz venues in Houston?

If so, please share the information.
