Communing with My Creative “Tribe” at BlogHer ‘14

July 30, 2014 By Elaine Gray

029This past weekend I communed with my blogging sister-girlfriends at BlogHer ’14 in San Jose, California a.k.a Silicon Valley.    This was the second time I attended this conference and I was excited about reconnecting with and meeting new female bloggers.

It is really hard to describe the feeling to be a part of this creative “tribe” of women.   The networking, sharing and bonding is truly unique and dispels the myth that women are competitive with one another.    We strategize on improving our writing craft and monetizing our blogs.   We celebrate our ability and freedom to lift our written voices to inform and engage others.   We honor those who are blazing trails in this arena.   We applaud dynamic women that are making a difference in our society through medicine, business, government and the arts.

There were many great women that shared with us throughout the conference and, just to give you an idea, here are the names of four of them:

  •  Arianna Huffington – Chair, President, Editor-in-Chief of Huffington Post Media Group
  • Richelle Parham – Chief Marketing Officer of eBay North America
  • Kerry Washington – Emmy nominated Actress and star of the hit TV show “Scandal”
  • Demetria Lucas – Author of “A Belle in Brooklyn” and known as the “Black Carrie Bradshaw”.   She interviewed Kerry Washington at BlogHer ’14.

At the end of the conference, McDonald’s threw us a party and Rev. Run of Run DMC was our DJ.   It was a blast!

I am already looking forward to next year!

Wonderful News and Honor for Me!

July 12, 2014 By Elaine Gray

Hi Faithful Readership,

Please note that I have added a WONDERFUL badge on my blog site sidebar.   I have been honored by BlogHer as they featured my blog post “He’s JUST a Man” in the Love & Sex section of their blog site.   BlogHer is a community of 5,000+ female bloggers with a cumulative readership of 93+million persons globally.   Even though I have been a member of BlogHer for almost 2 years, this was the very first post that I directly posted in that community of bloggers and it was selected as a feature post.  Unbelievable!

Please check out the featured post (the title has been changed to “You Can (and Should) Set Relationship Boundaries”) on the BlogHer site at http://www.blogher.com/hes-just-man.

Also, visit some of the posts of other awesome bloggers on the BlogHer site and share with your family/friends.

This is a very inspiring event for me which validates all of those late nights I spend with my thoughts and laptop.

I just wanted to share!

NaBloPoMo #6 After 1 Week of Daily Blogging, I’ve Learned…….

November 8, 2013 By Elaine Gray

NaBloPoMo November 2013Women Having Coffee

Before my friend and fellow writer/blogger asked me to join her in BlogHer NaBloPoMo for November 2013, I never considered daily blogging because I thought it would be difficult.    Now, I am glad I did not hesitate because I have learned some things about myself while writing the first 5 blog posts.   What I have learned is presented as follows in order of importance:

  1.  I have learned there are people interested in my writing because I have acquired many new followers here and on Twitter in the last 5 days.  I want to say THANK YOU to all of them for dropping by and reading my thoughts.
  1. I have learned if I am presented a topic I can write about it pretty quickly.   (Now, what that really means is I have an opinion about everything!)   This month the topics are being provided by BlogHer and that is helpful.  So, I realize that, with some pre-planning, I can determine some topics and increase the frequency of my blog posts in the upcoming months.
  1. Daily blogging engages the writer more with the blog readers because of the frequency of new content.    It is more interactive.
  1. With some discipline, time management and the use of scheduling tools, I can do this!

Girlfriends on the Road – BlogHer ’13 Conference

August 4, 2013 By Elaine Gray

Woman with travel cases.

Last week, from July 25 -27, I had the pleasure of joining one of my writing friends/colleagues in Chicago for the BlogHer ’13 conference.  This conference is the meeting place for 5,000+ female bloggers who, cumulatively, have a connection to 93 million blog readers globally.   The power of the female voice is awesome!

BlogHer 13

It was the first time I attended this conference and I was amazed at the women I met there.    Dynamic, opinionated, confident and fearless, these women shared the experience of the blogging life with one another in a collaborative effort.    We gained invaluable insight on striving to be successful women from our keynote speakers:

Ree Drummond – The Pioneer Woman – Food Network Star

http://www.thepioneerwoman.com

Guy Kawasaki – (the first male keynote speaker in the history of BlogHer)   http://www.guykawasaki.com

Sheryl Sandberg –  COO of Facebook and author of Lean In     http://www.leanin.org

Marjora Carter – New York Urban Revitalization Strategist

Lisa Donovan – Actress

Brit Morin – CEO of Brit & Co.  – DIY online community

Randi Zuckerberg – CEO of Zuckerberg Media, former Marketing Director of Facebook and sister of Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg

Gale Anne Hurd – Film Producer – (currently “The Walking Dead)

One of the most memorable events was the “The Voices of the Year Reception” in which Queen Latifah was the Mistress of Ceremonies.  This event showcased several bloggers and their contest-winning blog post.   Each one read to us and the power of their words moved us to laughter, joy, triumphant, and tears.  Another event I enjoyed was the “Speed Dating” Ice Breaker exercise where we did introductions with one another to make connections with other bloggers.

I learned new information to enhance my blog in the panel sessions, presentations offered, and interacting with the other attendees.   Overall, this conference was a great experience.
