Girlfriend Gathering Movie Review – Exodus: Gods and Kings

December 15, 2014 By Elaine Gray

Girls Night OutThis past weekend the girlfriends and I jaunted over to our local movie theatre to see one of our favorite actors, Christian Bale, in the biblical epic – Exodus: Gods and Kings.  As a person who enjoys the previous 1956 movie of the same story – The Ten Commandments with Charlton Heston – every time it comes on television, I was excited about this new movie.

Now, if you are expecting the drama of the previous story – a love triangle with dramatic love scenes with Nefretiri throwing herself at the feet of a shackled Moses and the edict that Moses’ name should be stricken from every Egyptian record and monument – then your expectations will not be met.    What you will find in Exodus: Gods and Kings is more in depth story about the internal struggles of Moses as he came to grips with who he was and what he was destined to achieve for his people.    We all know the story but this movie gives a viewpoint from a different angle.

Personally, I am one who refrains from having any expectations when I go to a movie or a play.   I allow the story to encapsulate my thoughts and take me to the desired story place and outcome.   Also, I love a story that delves into the human psyche and relationships.  So, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and recommend it as a “must see” on the big screen.

Best Things in Life #10 – Experiencing Snow

December 12, 2014 By Elaine Gray

My Patio SnowLiving down here on the Gulf Coast in Houston there aren’t many opportunities to experience snow.   In the course of my lifetime, I can count the number of times it has snowed here on 1 ½ hands.    The snow that fell to the ground did not last long and melted in a few hours so I guess you can’t really deem that as “experiencing” snow.   Yet, my entire hometown would shut down for the day because we Houstonians don’t know how to drive in those conditions.

My good friend that lives in Cleveland, Ohio would laugh at me when I told her it snowed in Houston.   She told me I didn’t really know what snow was like until I experienced it in a true snowbound city.    After hearing this taunt a couple of times, I decided to take her up on it and went to visit her in the month of February for a long weekend.    This was when I truly experienced snow for the first time.

It was beautiful to look at as she drove me to her home from the airport but when I stepped out of her car I felt like I was about to do the James Brown split.   Apparently, I had the wrong type of soles on my shoes for walking on an icy driveway.   It was so very cold and the snow started to fall really hard like one of the heavy rain days in Houston.   My girlfriend wanted to go out to introduce me to her relatives and have dinner.   I wanted to stay in her house because to me it was a blizzard outside.    She assured me it was not a blizzard but just a normal snowy day.

We drove down streets with snow heaped up like hills on the side.   I noticed it wasn’t so white all of the time and that snow could get a dirty brown color turning into slush.    At one point, we stopped by the grocery store and I saw these unusual contraptions in the store.   When I asked my girlfriend to identify it she gave me a big belly laugh.  She could not believe I did not recognize the contraption and had never seen one.   It was a snow/ice scraper for the car windshield.    I told her we did not need such a tool in Houston so how would I know about it.

I stayed a few days sliding across driveways and fearing for my well-being when we were out on the roads.    When we were in the airport for my return flight home, I was so happy to see the word Houston on the marquee because I knew I was heading to a warmer climate.  After that visit, my girlfriend and I made a pact.   She can come and visit me anytime from November to June and I would visit her anytime from June to October.

Another snow experience was a ski trip to Denver.   I only went once.   I spent the entire trip on my butt with my skis tangled up.   My friends had to help me untangle my skis several times.   Finally, I just sat on the sidelines drinking hot chocolate.   I did not even make the bunny hill.   However, I did enjoy snow tubing.   It was exhilarating!   I have never been so out of control as sliding down a hill of ice on an inner tire tube.

So, I know you are now wondering why is experiencing snow on my “Best Things in Life” list?    It is on my list because it is a beautiful natural gift from God and whatever happens in it is worth experiencing.

Snow

Competition Among Women – Fact or Fiction?

December 10, 2014 By Elaine Gray

women in business (2)When you meet a guy and he finally accepts that you will be keeping your panties on he can become a really good friend.    You can have very interesting conversations with him about the male point of view and he may even share some of their secrets on relationships with you.    Such was the case when I had a “not so friendly” discussion with a male friend about the alleged competition among women.

This male friend was a New Yorker and worked on Wall Street.   He was here in Houston for a week on a business trip.  We had several dinners scheduled for the week as it was his first visit to H-Town and I wanted to introduce him to some of our great cuisine.   Now, just to make it clear, he was only a friend.   Even though we were both single when we first met a couple of years previously in Atlanta, he had married since that time so that was a game changer.   Since we both worked in IT and were members of the same IT technical community, we kept in touch mostly about work.

So, here he was in Houston.   We had a nice dinner and the conversation flowed well.  Then he made a statement that grabbed my full attention.    He was telling me about the dynamic atmosphere of working on Wall Street.   He mentioned that the women all dressed their very best every day because they were always in competition.    At that point, I asked the naïve question, “In competition?  For what?”  He laughed and said, “They are in competition for a man.”    I laughed and told him I did not believe that was the reason they dressed well.   He reiterated his point.  I told him he was mistaken if he thought that every woman competes with another one for a man.

Well, at that point he became condescending.   He told me that I did not understand so he needed to make it clear for me with an example.

He said, “What if you are dating a man that is dating 2 other women?   Wouldn’t you compete with them for his full attention?”

I asked, “So, in this scenario, am I aware that he is dating the 2 other women?”

He replied, “Yes, he told you about it.”

I replied, “Ok.  Well, now he is only dating 2 women instead of 3.”

He said, “No, wait.   He hasn’t made up his mind yet.”

I replied, “Yes, but I have made up MY mind.”

He became exasperated.  “No, you don’t understand, he hasn’t made a choice, yet.”

I replied with laughter.  “No, YOU don’t understand.  I have a choice, too.   I choose not to be included in his choices.”

He looked at me for a long moment and then said, “Forget it. You are not trying to understand.”

I drove him back to his hotel keeping the conversation on trivial subjects.   However, I noticed he was unusually quiet.  I knew it was because of our enlightening conversation.    The next day he called to tell me that there had been a change in his schedule and he would not be able to make the remainder of our dinners.   I never heard from him again.   I have no regrets about that conversation.    I have no regrets about losing that friendship.   I discovered that he was a male chauvinist. He discovered that not only was I a Southern Belle with Cowgirl spunk but a Feminist, too!

I refuse to believe that a group of well-dressed and intelligent women working in one of the most dynamic environments in the U.S are spending their valuable time competing for a man.    I refuse to believe that any woman is competing with another one for a man.   Now, I know there are some unhealthy relations between women and it may seem that it is about a man.   However, if you look deeper, usually you will find there are other underlying issues possibly related to self-awareness, emotional issues, depression, etc.   This is where the focus should be – on the root cause and not on the symptom.

We should never tolerate negative “blanket” statements about female behavior in our hearing.   As women, we are as varied as snowflakes and the motivations that shape our actions are the same.

QUESTION(S)

Do you believe that women compete with one another for the attention of a man?

Waste Not, Want Not – The Global Soap Project

December 8, 2014 By Elaine Gray

Imagine.

You are a 14 year-old girl walking to school.    You are in the third day of your monthly menstrual cycle.   You have a body odor.   You can smell it and so does others around you.   This odor is a constant part of your life – month after month.  The boys walking to school near you are loudly taunting you and you know the taunts will continue once you reach your classroom.

What should you do?

The answer is simple – take a shower or a bath.    However, what if there is no soap?

There is no soap in your home.  There is no soap in your neighbor’s home.   There is no soap in your village.   Now, what should you do?

This was one of the plights described to us at the Blogalicious Conference by one of the speakers, Derreck Kayongo, founder of the Global Soap Project.   Mr. Kayongo was the first to invent a process to recycle slightly used bars of soap when he realized that hotels discard millions of bars of this type of soap per day.   The hotels in the U.S. alone discard more than 2 million bars of partially used soap per day!

Mr. Kayongo informed us that many teen girls drop out of school because they are ashamed of their body odor and cannot bear the taunts of the boys.  He also informed us that 1.7 million children die each year in developing countries due to hygiene-related diseases.   I was very dismayed that something I take for granted every day – never questioning its existence – was so lacking in other countries.  I was also ashamed that I was so uninformed about this need.

It was impressive to listen to how Mr. Kayongo, a refugee to America, determined this idea and became the innovator of this life-saving project.  In 2011, the year he started the Global Soap Project, he earned the distinction of being one of CNN’s Top Ten Heroes.  Now, his organization partners with other organizations – CDC, Care International, World Health Organization, etc. – to donate approximately 1 million bars of recycled soap annually to 32 other countries.

You can read more about Derreck Kayongo and the Global Soap Project at http://www.globalsoap.org.

I have added the Global Soap Project to my list of charitable organizations to support annually.    In researching how I can help, I learned that a $25 donation will provide seven persons enough soap for 1 year along with hygiene education.   Also, I learned that GSP is linked with Amazon Smile (http://smile.amazon.com/ref=smi_ge_rl_rd_gw?_encoding=UTF8&ein=27-0621849) and they will donate 0.5% of my eligible purchases to GSP.   I have enrolled in that program, too.   The most important way to support is to get as many hotels involved as possible.  I searched the website and I did not find many hotels in my city that participated so I plan to download the brochure from this location (http://www.globalsoap.org/get-involved/tell-a-hotel/) and inform hotels in my local area.

One of my core beliefs is that I am blessed to be a blessing.    Supporting this organization is another way for me to put action behind my belief.   It is my hope that some of you reading this post will consider supporting this organization in their effort to save lives with a bar of soap.

Please pass the information about this need and this organization to those in your circle that you think would be supportive.

QUESTION(S)

Had you heard about this organization before this post?

‘Tis the Season to be Jolly! Really?

December 3, 2014 By Elaine Gray

008Whatever happened to peaceful, joyful, and merry-making holidays?    As my sister and I drove on the highway passing in front of our local mall on Thanksgiving evening, we were stunned to see the throng of cars in the parking lots.   People had cut short their Thanksgiving meal with family/friends to start Christmas shopping by 5pm.   It seems everyone is on a quest to find the perfect gift.  Children are mesmerized by all of the advertisements and parents have their children wish lists in hand while they go into debt trying to buy everything on it.

Whatever happened to being content with a slice of Big Mama’s coconut cake or MaDear’s sweet potato pie?   Remember the joy of feeling like a big girl when you helped your mother “set” the table?  Remember the fun in playing with those cousins from out-of-town that you only saw once or twice a year?   Remember the joy of licking the cake dough from the spatula and scooping it from the mixing bowl after your mother put the cake in the oven?   Yes, receiving toys was great but it was only a part of the enjoyment.

Now, success is judged by how soon you started Christmas shopping during the year, how many gifts you bought, and how much money you spent for them.  The retailers start planting holiday shopping in our minds before the kids have gone trick-or-treating and no one has consideration for the poor retail workers who gulped down their Thanksgiving dinner so the rest of you can shop early.

In yesteryear, Thanksgiving had the appropriate reverence and no one thought of Christmas until the turkey leftovers were gone.  Parents watched their kid’s interests throughout the year to determine an appropriate gift or gifts for Christmas.   The child may not have received everything they wanted but they were content with whatever gift they received because it was truly a gift and not a fulfillment of a sense of entitlement.

The slow commercialization of the period between Halloween and New Years’ Day is a phenomenon that steadily grows each year.   Personally, I find myself rebelling against it.   As I watch people fervently shopping and traffic around the malls, all I want to do is arrive to a relaxing evening in my home or spend time with my family /friends.    I will purchase gifts for the children in my immediate family but I will not succumb to the “call” of the retailers and shop in wild abandonment.  I will pass some blessings on by donating some money to help others.   I will make some joyful noise/memories with my loved ones this season and that will be a wonderfully sufficient gift for me.

Let us put THANKS back in the last Thursday in November, GIVING back in the season,  and CHRIST back in Christmas.

QUESTION(s)

Do you feel there is too much commercialization of the holiday season?

Do you miss the old-fashioned family-value methods of celebrating Thanksgiving and Christmas?
